Welcome!

Welcome to the Anaesthetics Department at St George Hospital. As part of your 8 week Critical Care Rotation, you will spend a brief period in Anaesthetics. Your time here is short, with only about 5 to 10 days. As such, it is important to make the most of your time here.

The week prior to your Anaesthetics Rotation, you will receive your theatre allocations. Aim to be in your allocated theatre at 7:30am each morning. The exceptions to this would be Tuesday morning anaesthetics teaching, the pain round, and pre-admission clinic.

On Tuesday mornings at 7:15am, there is a teaching session in the Anaesthetics Department which you should attend.

Pain rounds start at about 8:30am, but you should contact the pain team registrar the day before via mobile through the hospital switchboard to arrange a time and place to meet.

Pre-admission Clinic starts at about 8:30am.

This website has been designed to facilitate your learning needs. It has been set out according to the days of the week, Monday to Friday. Each day, there will be a set of learning objectives for you to use. There will be readings and short video clips to supplement your learning.

Also, during your 8 week Critical Care Rotation, the Anaesthetic Department will aim to give you some tutorials:

  • Ultrasound Guided IV cannulation
  • Basic Airway Resuscitation Strategy
  • Peri-operative Fluid Management
  • Post-operative Pain Management
  • Viva exam practice (see “Friday” icon on this website)

General requirements of the Anaesthetics Rotation (as per your ED/Selective Term Logbook):

  • Attendance to morning and afternoon theatre sessions Monday-Friday. Have this signed off by the anaesthetist at the end of each list.
  • Case history presentation at the end of the week (more of this on the “Friday” icon on this website)
  • Maximise your learning during the week! It is not often you get one-to-one dedicated time to a Registrar and/or Consultant – so utilise this resource!

We hope to make your week in Anaesthetics an enjoyable and productive time!
